about

Box Elder was my first musical project and band (I was about 22 or 23). I was in bible school and was on my way to becoming a "minister" of some sort. Of what sort - i had no idea. My friend Jon Nichols and I formed Box Elder about a year after meeting there. Jon was an artist - so he made the cover with some creative drawing and gluing. During this season of life - i made up most of my own chords (just playing what "sounded good") - as well my my own "creative" melody lines. I have a distinct memory of Jon having an instinct for harmony - and me . . . well, at the time - i couldn't find a harmony if a box of them fell on my head. i was just a budding psalmist - interested in singing about what I considered the troubles of the world as they related to my relationship to God. But all these years later - the cringe factor on these songs hits about 8 or 9 for me.

Also - there was an additional song on this tape. It was by a friend of Jon's named Billiam, and was far and beyond the most beautiful and well written and presented song on the tape; but sadly, also the worst recorded. it's was so distorted and boomy - that i made a judgement call to not include it. Also - i never knew him - and this website isn't for him. So there. This stuff is kind hard for me to enjoy - but do your best to enjoy.

I am a songwriter who has been recording on tapes and old eMacs for going on thirty years. A couple years ago I got the privilege of going into a studio and recording a couple fine sounding albums. The rest are just amateur demos of what I wrote that year. ... more
